Safiyyah Ashanti is a highly accomplished cosmetologist, educator, and entrepreneur with over 25 years of experience in the beauty industry. She is also a licensed cosmetology instructor, a certification she earned in 2011, which has allowed her to mentor and inspire the next generation of beauty professionals.
Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and raised in Chesapeake, Virginia, Safiyyah’s journey in hairstyling began at the age of 12, styling the hair of her sisters, mother, and eventually friends and their acquaintances. Her passion led her to enroll at the Chesapeake Center for Science and Technology in 1997, where she completed her cosmetology training and earned her license in 1999.
Safiyyah began her career at Hair Cuttery, gaining hands-on experience as a full-time stylist for six years. In 2006, she launched her own business, Ashanti’s Hair Studio (also known as Ashanti’s Hair), a space dedicated to promoting healthy hair while providing exceptional service to her clients.
Throughout her career, Safiyyah has earned widespread recognition for her expertise and artistry. In 2010, she competed with her team at the prestigious Bronner Brothers Hair & Barber Battle, winning the grand prize of $20,000. In 2016, she began working behind the scenes at New York Fashion Week, a role she continued for six consecutive seasons. She also had the honor of joining the official styling team for Virgin Island Fashion Week, where she styled for fashion shows and taught hair and skincare classes at vocational schools in St. Croix and St. Thomas.
Safiyyah’s passion for her craft has taken her across the country, styling and educating in cities such as New York, Washington D.C., North Carolina, California, Las Vegas and currently Houston Texas. Her role as a licensed instructor allows her to combine her love for hairstyling with her dedication to educating and empowering others in the industry.
In August 2024, Safiyyah celebrated 25 years as a licensed cosmetologist. With a career defined by creativity, professionalism, and a commitment to excellence, she continues to thrive as a trusted stylist, mentor, and leader in the beauty industry.
